This was really for me | Washington DC boudoir photography

It’s a fact that most people who contact me say they’re doing this for someone special or an occasion and I get it. Most of us women have been conditioned to think doing something incredible for yourself is selfish, or vain, or you’re being too much. So we use the curtain of an occasion as the fore front reason as to how we can justify an experience like this.

I know, it’s really for you.

When I met with Ms. P, she was feeling great in all areas of her life. She had been getting into better physical shape, she’s killing it at work, and jsut all around fantastic, but like all my clients, there were still worries about doing a shoot like this. I would go on, but she does an amazing job at telling you all about her experience from her persepective:

How would you rate your boudoir experience on a scale of 1-10?: A definite 10! The consult was a great introduction and helped me get more comfortable with the whole concept. Julie made lingerie shopping easy by suggesting shops to work with (and now I have great go-to places!). The shoot itself was a great adventure. Julie made me feel incredibly at ease throughout; helped me drop all the judgmental stuff we all carry, and took on all the burden of arranging poses. Julie radiates her belief in the power of women and the importance of claiming and owning that!
It has been a bad ass year for me; I am reveling in my power, at the absolute top of my game at work, enjoying being fit and active, and feeling very much alive. My biggest concern was that, at 58, I felt more fabulous inside than I actually looked on the outside. Who wants to give up a positive illusion? I seriously considered not doing the shoot so I could hang on to any delusions that weren't realities. After all who wants to hear they look good "for their age"? I needn't have worried. Julie captured incredible shots that make my best attributes shine, and gave me photos that I will treasure as empirical evidence forever.

How has your boudoir experience affected you or changed you?: I started out thinking of the photos as a gift for my spouse but realized along the way they were really for me. (Admittedly he was delightfully floored when I surprised him at the reveal!) Prepping for the shoot led to some interesting introspection and revelations.
I was a bit timid about printing and displaying the images. My spouse insisted that one particular shot be 30" x 45" to hang in our bedroom and Julie echoed his encouragement. The trust she had built with me made me comfortable that this was not just vanity but rather a great aesthetic decision. It and the other images in our home remind me daily of my strengths. What a confidence booster!
Picking up my book and prints the same week that I became a grandmother will be something I will remember, and giggle about, forever!

What advice would you give someone who was nervous about or hesitant to book their own boudoir experience with me? : We are all way more fabulous than we give ourselves credit for. That is true right now, not ten years ago, not in two months when we lose some pounds, or the kids get older, or after we change our workout routine. Do it now! Wherever you are right now, have the photos done so you can see how incredible you are. You will be delightfully surprised and have so much to be proud of. Just look at the photos on Julie's sites, they are not professional models but real human beings who are not perfect but are absolutely awesome.

Is there anything at all you would change about your boudoir experience?: I wish I could offer some constructive criticism but instead will note a positive. I loved the care with packaging of all the aspects of the shoot. It made it all feel so lush and curated. All part of feeling very pampered and rewarded for taking the leap.

When you panic a week before your session but come out feeling like a GODDESS

Remember that time I talked about how important picking a photographers style was really important? J had been in instagram and was saving a lot of black and white photos she really liked and then after taking another look at where these photos came from, she saw that they were from the Northern Virginia area and were all my work. If that doesn’t say she found her style, then I don’t know what does! It’s easy to fall in some kind of rabbit hole in instagram but when you find what you’re looking for, that justifies the bucket loads of hours spent scrolling and saving. Girl, I know.

It is absolutely normal really get nervous right before your shoot and J let me know she was having hesitations about not being able to pose or look the way she wanted in her own mirror so how was she supposed to do that in front of a camera. I reassured her that 98% of my clients have never had a shoot like before and don’t know how to pose. And that I was going to guide her into all the poses and expressions and to just trust the process. I got you!

What was even more incredible is that J drove all the way up from the Charlottesville, VA area to have her shoot with us and I’m so glad she did! She had some amazing Honey Birdette lingerie and I was so excited to have her feel amazing and to create a very personal surprise gift for her soon to be husband.

My search for a boudoir photographer began on instagram...like most great searches ;-). I typed in a tagline and I began to see the most beautiful black and white photographs...the bookmarking had begun. As a returned back to my original search, I began tagging more and more photos all from the same original tagline. Once I had established quite the collection, I investigated the photos further and found that they all belonged to the same photographer...Julie. Her style was breathtaking and her ladies looked sexy and natural. Once I found her website, I was blown away by how calm and informative she seemed without ever having have met her. Her website had women of all shapes, sizes, and nationalities in the most flattering light and poses. My boudoir shoot was nothing more than amazing! I made the absolute best decision in picking Julie.

With my wedding approaching, I wanted to surprise my future hubby-to-be.I had never done anything like a boudoir shoot before so I knew he would never expect it! The album that I purchased from my session was the gift that I gave my husband during out first look on my wedding day. He was more than surprised!

My biggest fear in doing a boudoir session was the feeling of being exposed. I had never done anything like this before....and frankly am not the best at posing sexy. Prior to my shoot, I remember sending Julie an email freaking out, realizing I had NO IDEA how to pose myself to look attractive and flattering after many failed attempts in my bathroom mirror. Julie sent the most sensitive and kind email response, telling me not to worry and that she would guide me along the way. Julie was 100% honest. Throughout my shoot, she guided me every step of the way: "purse your lips...arch your back...more...I know you can give me a bit more...amazing." She was kind, thoughtful, and encouraging! I never felt confused or embarrassed....she made me feel like I had been doing this for years.

What was your favorite part of your boudoir session?: There were too many to count! However my two favorites would be hair and makeup and post-shoot. I LITERALLY FELT LIKE A GODDESS! My hair and makeup was completed to absolute perfection...I felt so beautiful and it was just how I envisioned it would be. Following the shoot, Julie showed me a sneak peak photo and it looked amazing! WAYYYYY better than I could ever have imagined. I felt so beautiful and free...it was a feeling that every woman should experience.
